Paradise Hill, Afternoon in the Countryside

While visiting family, my husband and I went driving looking for a countryside scene to paint. As we passed a familiar grain elevator in Paradise Hill that always grabs your attention with that bright white against the blue sky, I demanded we pull over and take photos. As we drove up, the owner Brock came out, curious as to what we were up to. He was very nice and invited us to take photos and set up on the property to paint the scene. So I decided to try it out. It was quite a challenge and I spent a good hour on the drawing outline of the building. It's not perfect but the final outcome is quite stunning with the contrast between building and sky. My husband spent the time studying his aviation text books. One lesson learned on this outing was that using yellow as my base layer, especially when it hadn't fully cured, was not ideal. When I got the painting home, I cleaned it up and reworked the grasses at the bottom (I really should have had more space at the bottom). I think this is another one I'd like to try again, maybe on a larger canvas. I just love the contrast between the blue and white!

The building was recently acquired by Brock & family and they really did a great job fixing the place up. The office is really nice. You can find out more about their business here: https://www.facebook.com/josuttesag/
